Contingent Recruiters

You are familiar with contingent recruiters.  Many contingent recruiters are excellent. Contingent recruiters only earn a fee if their candidate is selected and starts at the client firm.

However, there are some who give our industry a poor name.  Therefore, if you find a contingent recruiter that you like and respect, continue to work with them.  Good contingent recruiters are hard workers who deserve your business.

Actually, although RecruiterGuy is a contract recruitment consulting firm, we do contingent recruitment between contracts. Bill Humbert is an AIRS trained recruiter whose professional recruitment experience dates back to 1981. We have a special business model for growing small companies that we only offer to companies in Utah.  Therefore, we know what contingent recruiters experience.

Contingent recruiters are great if you build a good relationship with them.  The good recruiters are aware of your hidden openings - the ones where you have not opened a requisition for a new employee, but would for the right person. They can introduce you to candidates who may be available, and you do not have open req.'s, but you will open a req. for that person.

The three biggest downsides are:

  1. The recruiters who simply throw resumes at you. As a contract recruiter consultant occasionally clients will want me to work with contingent recruiters. It does not take much time to determine who is good and who is just seeing if electronic resumes will stick.
  2. Their lock out list.  Contingent recruiters typically work with many companies.  Therefore, they may not recruit out of a percentage of companies within your industry.  Always ask them what companies they ethically may not recruit out of. If they say that is not a problem, it may mean that they will recruit out of your company after they get to know your staff. The good contingent recruiters would not consider doing that. Unfortunately there are recruiters who pass through our industry annually who are only looking for the short term gain.
  3. The expense.  If you have many positions to fill, contingent recruiters may be expensive.

The major problem of working with contingent recruiters with a "pool" of candidates within your industry is that the best candidates in the "pool" may not be available to you because they work for other clients of that recruiter in your industry.
