Retained Search

Retained search firms typically are used for executive placement.  You know who they are.  Most have been in business for a long time and are effective.  Their effectiveness is limited, most of the time, by the strength of your job description and by their lock out list.  Ask the recruiters what companies in your industry are on their "Lock out" list. Occasionally clients will confuse retained search with contract recruitment.

The recruiters are trained to do a good job interviewing the executives to develop the relationship and the description of the position.

Many of these retained recruiters have filled many of the top positions in corporations throughout the US.

Within their databases, they know many of the best high level candidates.

They really only have two downsides.

The first is that a percentage of the potential candidates are "locked out" because they work with clients.

The second is if an executive is located two blocks from your location and is a perfect fit for your position, but is involved in another search. You will not see their resume until they are no longer a candidate in the previous search.

Obviously, this potentially has an impact on your bottom line.  You may have to relocate the second, third or tenth best fit, depending upon who are involved in other searches and who are the clients.

Many seasoned Contract Recruiter Consultants have successfully searched and recruited top level executives. I have had a number of successful "C" level searches. During 2009 RecruiterGuy created a pool of 20 seasoned corporate turnaround CEO and CFO consultants for a management consulting firm. Therefore, do not discount your seasoned Contract Recruiter Consultant for a "C" level search. Honestly, those searches are sometimes easier than middle management searches.
